Vitamin C is both an antioxidant as well as a pro-oxidant and we will talk about this today in this Oasis Insights video.
Vitamin C ties into so many different things as it relates to how we treat cancer at An Oasis of Healing versus how conventional medicine treats cancer. The way conventional medicine treats cancer is they look for a one to one effect.
This means that they control all these variables and just give one thing to show one effect. Now, to show the evidence of that, that makes some sense, but that’s just not the way the body works.
The effect can be shown, and that’s why when you see research, they’ll do it to show drug A causes effect B. However, they then add it into the body and the head-scratcher is, well, it causes C, D, E, X, Y, Z also.
This is because they’re trying to control this environment, and yet you then put it into an environment that’s very variable. This is what I call the one to one effect.
When you look at vitamin C as a pro-oxidant versus an antioxidant, conventional medicine says, “Well, it’s one or the other.” And I tell you the answer is, it’s yes, it’s both. And there’s really a lot of variables that go into why that is.
Let’s talk about these variables. The first variable is all about the environment. And by the environment, what I’m talking about is the cellular environment.
When you have a cancer cell, it is very different from a normal cell. The cancer is not you, it’s simply a part of you. When you have a cancer cell, its environment that it’s constructed around itself is different than that of healthy cells in the same body at the same time.
What we know about a cancer cell environment versus a healthy cell environment is it’s incredibly different, especially in terms of detoxification. There are many other ways that it’s different, the cellular metabolism, the inflammatory processes, the genetic upregulation, downregulation expression, all these things.
As it relates to detoxification, cancer cells are very limited in certain detoxification enzymes, particularly one called catalase. Whereas healthy cells can produce this readily, cancer cells are very limited in their capacity to produce it.
The same applies to superoxide dismutase, another detoxification enzyme. There are others that have been shown to have fewer effects than maybe future studies will show equal effects.
When vitamin C is given, as a result of the limited catalase activity in cancer cells, it is actually taken into the cancer cells. This results in a lot of free radical production. And because of that limited detoxification capacity, the cancer cell can’t handle it.
This is a perfect example of how you can give vitamin C, have an antioxidant effect, and have a pro-oxidant effect at the same time. The reason is because of the environment to which you’re giving it and that dictates the effect.
